About the Author of The History of Arabic Literature

"Ahmed Hassan Al-Zayyat Pasha (April 2, 1885 – May 12, 1968) is considered one of the leading figures of the cultural renaissance in Egypt and the Arab world, playing a prominent role in the development of Arab culture, literature, and language. He founded Al-Risala magazine, which served as a platform for disseminating cultural and literary ideas, achieving great success in this field. He was also elected a member of the Arabic Language Academies in Cairo, Damascus, and Baghdad, and received the State Appreciation Award in Literature in 1962 in Egypt, in recognition of his significant contributions to this field.

In this book, the thinker Ahmed Hassan Al-Zayyat discusses the history of Arabic literature, which embodies refined art and has had a profound impact on the lives of Arabs, an influence that continues to this day.

In this book, the author considered the close relationship between literary history and the political and social history in the lives of Arabs, where nations are mutually affected by literature and history. Therefore, the author chose to divide the history of Arabic literature into five eras, according to the political and social changes experienced by the Arab and Islamic nations, which are:

1- The Pre-Islamic Era (Jahiliyya), which begins with the independence of the Adnani from the Yemenis in the mid-5th century AD, and ends with the advent of Islam in 622 AD.
2- The era of the advent of Islam and the Umayyad State, which begins with Islam and ends with the establishment of the Abbasid State in 132 AH.
3- The Abbasid Era, which begins with the establishment of their state and ends with the fall of Baghdad to the Tatars in 656 AH.
4- The Turkish Era, which begins with the fall of Baghdad to the Turks in 656 AH, and ends with the European occupation of the Levant in 1918 AD.
5- The Modern Era, which continues to the present day, witnessing developments in Arabic literature and an openness to world literature.
