Abu Abdullah Muhammad ibn Ismail al-Bukhari (13 Shawwal 194 AH – 1 Shawwal 256 AH) / (July 20, 810 AD – September 1, 870 AD) was a great memorizer of the Quran and one of the most important scholars of hadith, biographical evaluation (rijal), al-jarh wa al-ta'dil (discrediting and accrediting narrators), and defects (ilal) among Sunni Muslims.

He has many works, including the book Jami' as-Sahih, known as Sahih al-Bukhari, which is considered the most authentic book after the Holy Quran. He spent sixteen years collecting and compiling it. Muhammad ibn Ismail al-Bukhari was born an orphan but began seeking knowledge at an early age. He traveled throughout the Islamic world to seek hadith and learn, and he heard from nearly a thousand shaykhs and collected about 600,000 hadiths.

He gained widespread fame and was acknowledged by his peers, teachers, and later scholars for his prominence and leadership in hadith, earning the title "Amir al-Mu'minin fi al-Hadith" (Commander of the Faithful in Hadith). Many great imams of hadith, such as Muslim ibn al-Hajjaj, Ibn Khuzaymah, and al-Tirmidhi, studied under him. He was the first to compile a book dedicated solely to authentic hadith in Islam. He was also among those who wrote about the history of narrators. Towards the end of his life, he faced persecution and trials, was expelled from Bukhara and Nishapur, and settled in a village near Samarkand, where he passed away.
