فتح العرب لمصر د. ألفريد ج. بتلر
The book deals with the history of Egypt during the Roman rule of Egypt, then the Persian invasion led by Khosrow, then the return of Roman rule led by Heraclius, then it begins to enter the stage of the Arab Islamic conquest led by Amr ibn al-Aas and the subsequent years of Islamic rule of Egypt and its Coptic people. This distinction makes the book a living document full of many testimonies that explain the living conditions of the people of Egypt and their worldly and religious suffering under the rule of the Romans and Persians, and their readiness for the Arab conquest in difficult circumstances in which they suffered a lot of oppression under the rule of the Romans and Persians.
The book addresses, in various aspects, the personality of Al-Muqawqis, the religious and military ruler of Egypt appointed by Heraclius during the Arab invasion of Egypt, and how his personality was the key to entering the great Babylon Fortress and the peace treaty he made with Amr ibn al-Aas, which angered Heraclius and caused his exile, then his return after Heraclius' death and the second treaty that preceded the conquest of Alexandria and the Arabs' entry into it peacefully, then by force after its people revolted. There is no doubt that Al-Muqawqis' personality was the subject of detailed historical research throughout history, and the author devoted a separate research at the end of the book in which he discusses and analyzes various aspects of the reality of this personality, with an explanation of different viewpoints from various historians, in a distinguished addition from the author in this book.
The book is 625 large-sized pages long and is full of many events and details, and helpful footnotes that were added by the translator Muhammad Farid Abu Hadid and the editor Nahla Anis, in a distinguished addition that increases the value of the book and its events and contributes to enriching the reader's information about this great research, which is indispensable for anyone interested in that complex period of Egyptian history.
