The mention of seeking forgiveness is abundant in the Quran, sometimes it is commanded, as in the words of Allah Almighty: ﴿And seek forgiveness of Allah. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful﴾ [Al-Baqarah: 199] I seek forgiveness from Allah.
And sometimes its practitioners are praised, as in His saying, the Almighty: ﴿And those who seek forgiveness at dawn﴾ [Al Imran: 17]. And at other times, Allah, glory be to Him, mentions that He forgives whoever seeks His forgiveness, as in His saying, the Almighty: ﴿And whoever does evil or wrongs himself then seeks forgiveness of Allah will find Allah Forgiving and Merciful﴾ [An-Nisa: 110]. I seek forgiveness from Allah, there is no god but Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer, and I repent to Him.
So, seeking forgiveness: is an expression of asking for forgiveness with the tongue, and repentance is an expression of abstaining from sins with the heart and limbs. And His saying: asking for forgiveness with the tongue is not intended as a superficial request for forgiveness, rather it means a detailed explanation, rather seeking forgiveness is asking for forgiveness with the tongue, translated from the state of the heart, by asking for forgiveness and abstaining from sins. So your saying: I seek forgiveness from Allah carries all the meanings of repentance: I admit the sin, regret the sin, ask for forgiveness, and resolve not to return.
