About the author of The Genius of Omar

“Abbas Mahmoud al-Akkad (1889-1964) was an Egyptian writer, thinker, journalist, and poet, born in Aswan, southern Egypt, to an Egyptian father and a Kurdish mother. Al-Akkad was famous for his literary and intellectual writings and played a major role in the literary and political life in Egypt.

About the book The Genius of Omar

In this book, al-Akkad used his intellect to encompass the greatness of his hero, whose nature was new and whose genius was unique. The book is not merely a narrative of the biography of Omar ibn al-Khattab or a presentation of the history of his era, but rather a description and study of his stages and an indication of the characteristics of his greatness, and a benefit from these characteristics for psychology, ethics, and the realities of life.

Despite al-Akkad's keenness to focus on what benefits this study, he felt embarrassed when he tried to emulate fair writers, who combine praises with flaws, as he found no flaws or anything worthy of blame in the life of Omar ibn al-Khattab, which made him expect to be accused of exaggeration, bias, and admiration. Al-Akkad pointed out that Omar ibn al-Khattab held himself accountable more severely than anyone else could have, which indicates the difficulty in holding him accountable or evaluating him.
